The principle behind the machine is simple: raise the hammer and drop it or propel it into the workpiece, which rests on the anvil. Cold forging is a high speed manufacturing process whereby metal is shaped at room temperature often without the need for the removal of material. The choice of the appropriate type of bearing (radial, angular contact or thrust) is determined by the direction of the load which will act on the bearing, while the choice of the appropriate sliding contact surface combination is primarily determined by the way in which the load acts (constant or alternating direction). Radial load: When the load is purely or predominantly radial, a radial spherical plain bearing should be selected. These bearings can accommodate a certain amount of axial load in addition to the radial load. Axial load: When the load is purely or predominantly axial then the choice should be a spherical plain thrust bearing. These bearings can accommodate a certain proportion of radial load in addition to the axial load.
