60. Roll Forging
Roll forging is a process where round or flat bar stock is reduced in thickness and increased in length. Roll forging is performed using two cylindrical or semi-cylindrical rolls, each containing one or more shaped grooves. A heated bar is inserted into the rolls and when it hits a stop the rolls rotate and the bar is progressively shaped as it is rolled through the machine. The piece is then transferred to the next set of grooves or turned around and reinserted into the same grooves. This continues until the desired shape and size is achieved. A thrust bearing is a particular type of rotary bearing. Like other bearings they permit rotation between parts, but they are designed to support a high axial load while doing this. Thrust bearings come in several varieties. Thrust ball bearings, composed of ball bearings supported in a ring, can be used in low thrust applications where there is little axial load. These are the type most commonly used in automotive applications (to support the wheels of a motor car for example), where they are used in pairs to accommodate axial thrust in either direction, as well as radial loads. They can support rather larger thrust loads than the ball type due to the larger contact area, but are more expensive to manufacture. Spherical roller thrust bearings consists of two rings and asymmetrical rollers of spherical shape. They can accommodate combined radial and axial loads and also accommodate misalignment of the shafts. They are often used together with radial spherical roller bearings. Fluid bearings, where the axial thrust is supported on a thin layer of pressurized liquid, these give low drag. Magnetic bearings, where the axial thrust is supported on a magnetic field. This is used where very high speeds or very low drag is needed, for example the Zippe-type centrifuge. They are commonly used in automotive, marine, and aerospace applications. Thrust bearings are used in cars because the forward gears in modern car gearboxes use helical gears which, while aiding in smoothness and noise reduction, cause axial forces that need to be dealt with. The double helical or herringbone gear balances the thrust caused by normal helical gears. One specific thrust bearing in an automobile is the clutch "throw out" bearing, sometimes called the clutch release bearing.

If you have plastic core scooter wheels then fitting the bearings is very straight forward as they typically can be pushed in by hand without issue. Fitting scooter bearings into Metal core wheels is a little trickier as they are designed to be a tight fit so pushing them in by hand rarely works. In our workshop we used to use a vise to gently squeeze them in, but now we use a hammer!! Apply a small amount of grease to the edges of each bearing you are going to install. Apply a small amount of grease to the inside hole on the scooter wheel where the bearings are going to be fitted. Place the bearing over the hole in the wheel and try and make sure that it is straight/level as possible. Place either a block of wood or an old paperback book over the top of the bearing and gently strike this with the hammer (Important - do not strike the bearing directly with the hammer). When the bearing has been hammered in fully into the hole in the middle of your wheel it should sit flush with the edge of the wheel Turn the wheel over and insert the bearing spacer (you will need a bearing spacer, if you do not use one your wheel will not spin when you do your axles up securely!)

Upset forging increases the diameter of the workpiece by compressing its length. Based on number of pieces produced this is the most widely used forging process. A few examples of common parts produced using the upset forging process are engine valves, couplings, bolts, screws, and other fasteners. Upset forging is usually done in special high-speed machines called crank presses, but upsetting can also be done in a vertical crank press or a hydraulic press. The machines are usually set up to work in the horizontal plane, to facilitate the quick exchange of workpieces from one station to the next. A thrust bearing is a particular type of rotary bearing. Like other bearings they permit rotation between parts, but they are designed to support a high axial load while doing this. Spherical roller thrust bearings consists of two rings and asymmetrical rollers of spherical shape. They can accommodate combined radial and axial loads and also accommodate misalignment of the shafts. They are often used together with radial spherical roller bearings.
